Description

"[Lightner] has captured beautifully the human side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and I believe that anyone who is interested in seeing Middle East peace come forth should read this novel. It is a story of hope, of love, of joy, of tragedy, of survival, of bedrock human emotion." -- Pat Robertson

At 24, Nava has already married and divorced. Feeling defeated, she leaves her ex-husband in the US and returns to the Israeli village of her birth and the villa where she grew up and her Holocaust-survivor mother still lives. She writes a book about her father's life and death, both to heal herself and bequeath him a legacy. To her amazement, the book is published to good reviews. Nava meets Elie, a handsome, cultured older man who sweeps her off her feet. As a Christian Arab, he resists the relationship, but Nava doesn't care, even revels in it. The world of her mother is dead and buried. In the '90s, Middle East peace is breaking out. She convinces Elie to marry her and her vision of becoming a writer in and of a new age.

Despite the birth of their son Sam, life doesn't feel right to Nava, who compels Elie to move to the West Bank. Life, indeed, becomes a beautiful dream, just as Nava planned it. Elie's father gives them his charming villa in a hilly Bethlehem suburb. Nava and Elie are deeply in love, but Nava is unable to have more children ñ or produce another book. She pours her energies into her West Bank family and friends and thwarts her mother's efforts to reach out to Sam.

But life grows insecure when Arafat returns to the West Bank. Nava believes he's become a man of peace until gangs of armed young men begin cruising their neighborhood, imposing ominous new rules on the population. The eager young, including her son Sam, are indoctrinated in militancy in school. Elie wants to return to Israel, but Nava, ignoring the anti-Jewish murmurs of people she's considered close friends, wants to wait it out. When the militants set up guns on her terrace aimed into Israel, Elie realizes their days there are numbered as things grow worse for Elie's father in Bethlehem, for Sam who must be sent away, for Elie now torn between worlds, and for Nava whose self-deception has led them into disaster. Now she must save her family despite the terrorist perils. After a lifetime of self-deception, can she overcome her own instincts? Can she bring them to safety?
